- Types of Boat Anchors
1. Hall Type Stockless Anchor
It has a unique design with a concave-shaped fluke and a long shank, and it is commonly used on larger ships, oil rigs, floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessels, and other marine structures.
2. High Holding Power (HHP) AC-14 Type Stockless Anchor
This type of anchor has a unique design with a ballast tank that helps it dig deeper into the seabed. It’s commonly used on oil rigs and large ships.
3. High Holding Power (HHP) Pool Stockless Anchor (N Type, TW Type)
The Pool Anchor has a unique design with multiple flukes that spread out to provide better holding power. Pool Anchors are available in various sizes and capacities, ranging from small anchors for pleasure craft to large anchors for offshore platforms and drilling rigs.
4. Danforth Stock Anchor
Also known as the Fluke anchor, this type of anchor is commonly used in small boats and has a triangular shape with sharp flukes or points that dig into the seabed. It is commonly used in recreational boating and small commercial vessels, such as fishing boats and pleasure craft. It is not recommended for use in rocky or heavily weeded seabeds, as the flukes may become entangled and reduce holding power.
5. Navy Stockless Anchor
Also known as a “stockless” or “admiralty” anchor, this type of anchor is designed for use on large ships and has a long shank with flukes at one end and a ring for the chain at the other.
6. Mushroom Stockless Anchor
This type of anchor has a round, mushroom-shaped head and is used in areas with soft, muddy bottoms.
7. Delta Flipper Stockless Anchor
This type of anchor has a similar design to the plow anchor but with a sharper angle and wider flukes for better holding power. The key advantage of the Delta Flipper Anchor is its ability to be easily deployed and retrieved using remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) or other subsea equipment. It can also be easily transported and stored on ships or barges due to its compact size and lightweight construction. It is commonly used in offshore applications such as oil rigs, wind farms, and subsea installations.
8. Stevin MK5 Stock Anchor
This type of anchor has a very high holding power and is used in harsh weather conditions. It has a unique triangular shape with a wide fluke at the bottom. It is commonly used on larger vessels such as cargo ships, tankers, and naval vessels. It is also used in offshore applications, such as oil rigs and wind farms, where a reliable anchoring system is needed to keep structures in place.
9. Plow or CQR Stock Anchor
This type of anchor is named after its plow-like shape and is designed to dig deep into the seabed for a secure hold.
10. Claw or Bruce Stock Anchor
This type of anchor has a claw-like shape with pointed flukes that dig into the seabed and provides good holding in rocky or hard seabeds.
11. Grapnel Stock Anchor
This type of anchor has multiple hooks or flukes that can grab onto rocks, reefs, or other structures on the seabed.
12. Spek Stockless Anchor
This type of anchor has a concave shape with a flattened bottom and is designed to be self-righting. It’s commonly used on offshore platforms and drillships.
13. Baldt Stockless Anchor
Baldt Anchor provides a high holding power even in soft and muddy seabeds. The concave fluke design allows it to create a suction effect when it is deployed, which helps it to hold fast to the seabed. The Baldt anchor also features a special swivel device at the head of the anchor that allows it to rotate easily and align itself with the direction of pull. Baldt anchors are commonly used on larger ships, such as tankers and cargo vessels, as well as offshore drilling rigs and other marine structures. They are known for their reliability and durability, even in harsh weather conditions, and are considered one of the best types of anchors for holding power.
14. High Holding Power(HHP) Matrosov Type Stockless Anchor
It was developed by the Russian navy in the 1930s and features two wide rectangular flukes that are connected to a long shank with no stock or crossbar attached. The design of the Matrosov Anchor allows it to penetrate deep into the seabed and provide a strong, reliable hold even in adverse weather conditions. It is commonly used on larger vessels such as cargo ships, tankers, and naval vessels.15. Stainless Steel Anchor
They are available in various shapes and sizes. In addition to their use on yachts, stainless steel anchors are also commonly used on other types of boats, such as sailboats, motorboats, and fishing vessels.
